 At our Annual Meeting, members elect the Church Council which consists of three officers, three members-at-large, and representatives of five standing committees, i.e., Building & Grounds, Finance, Membership Development, Lifespan Education, Social Justice, and Sunday Services. At this meeting, annual church goals and objectives are developed, and an annual budget is approved. The Council appoints a Church Treasurer at its annual meeting.

Throughout the year the Church Council coordinates and monitors the activities of the standing and special committees of the church. It is the administrative body of the church, developing policy issues and budgets it takes to the congregation for final approval. The council meets every month on the third Wednesday at 7:00 pm.  Minutes of council meetings can be found in the Member Area of the website (password required).

Proposals for actions by the Church Council may be submitted by any committee or person, but in order to provide Council members with notice of a proposal it is necessary that the proposal be described using a special form developed by the Council.  The form needs to be completed and delivered to one of the Co-Chairs at least a week prior to the Council meeting at which the proposal is to be raised.  Click on the link below to download a pdf or Word version of the form:

The UU Church of Belfast began in November, 1993, with a meeting of 22 people interested in establishing a liberal, religious presence in Waldo County. On February 13, 1994, we held our first formal worship service, and on November 5, 1994, we formally declared our intent to gather a new UU congregation with 48 founding members. In September, 1995, we called our first part-time minister and in October, 1995, we were accepted into membership in the Unitarian Universalist Association. In August, 1997, an extension minister joined us on a full-time basis.

The UU Church of Belfast covenants as a community--

    • to share our diverse spiritual paths;
    • to communicate with each other in the spirit of fellowship;
    • to celebrate our relationship with the natural world;
    • to quest for meaning in life; and
    • to spread the light of hope and justice to the world around us.

THE UNITARIAN UNIVERSALIST PRINCIPLES

We gather together to affirm and promote:

1. The inherent worth and dignity of every person.
2. Justice, equity, and compassion in human relation.
3. Acceptance of one another and encouragement to spiritual growth.
4. A free and responsible searxh for truth and meaning.
5. The right of conscience and use of the democratic process within our congregations and society at large.
6. The goal of world community with peace, liberty, and justice for all.
7. Respect for the interdependent web of all existence of which we are a part.
