"You know…I was a part of the very small group (maybe four or five of us?) that came together studying Buddhism over ten years ago. We met in the small building next to the Dance Studio, in what is now known as Morningstar Midwifery. This was called our “office” at the time. The choir also met there for practice, and a small group of religious education or childcare folks were there on Sunday, as church met across the street, in the old Abbot Room of the library.

We didn’t know how to meditate, and all we had at first to look at was a children’s book, which we saw on a shelf there. Later, we began to read another book together, and after a few months, we decided to add meditation…about five minutes. When we got the church, we met one evening a week at church. Of course there was usually another group meeting there at the same time. There were times when there were only three or four of us. Bob, my husband, was not a part of this group; but when he died, and I was not quite able to maintain the group, two other people took my place until I began to recover. Scott King was one of them.

It took another few years before we began to meet in the present format, before we had week-day meditation, and before we started annual retreats.

Perhaps we should have called ourselves Beginner’s Mind Sangha since we’ve always started from the simplest of places!
