The Meaning of Leadership
given
by Linda Bowe

We are living in a time when “good leadership” is needed more than ever.  But leadership is a complex and difficult term to define, and those who hold positional authority in an organization may fall short of actually providing leadershp for the people in their care.  In this service Linda Bowe will discuss the questions that have arisen for her about the value of moral leadership and its application to her work with educational leaders around the state.

In the Pits

given by our minister, Pam Gross

Many human stories of religious faith suggest that a 'dark night of the soul' is a prerequisite to genuine Faith. If this is true, then perhaps we should be taking a look into those pits. Ironically, it is in the deep darkness of the pits of life, where human beings often find the bedrock of faith.

The Hungry Ghosts
given by Debbie Bailly

The insatiable craving for MORE (objects, sense pleasures, esteem, power, love, etc.) is not a sin or character flaw; it is universally human. We seek happiness, fulfillment, and contentment by endlessly trying to satisfy our desires, but it's like trying to quench our thirst with seawater – the more we drink, the thirstier we become. Debbie reflects on how to want what we already have.

In Silence

given by Lane Fisher

Lane Fisher explores some of the grace that is possible when we relinquish words. (There are times when silence is a sin, but that's another service!) Lane draws upon the wisdom of some great souls, and shares insights from three different experiences of sustained silence in the past year: a solo retreat at her birthday, a week in community at Findhorn, and a weekend with her partner. Together, we'll savor a short silence. Lane is a member of our congregation now living in Brooklin, Maine, where she peddles words for Hope magazine.

A Conservative Case for Gay Marriage
given by Mark Worth

Some conservatives are calling for a U.S. constitutional amendment denying marriage for gays and lesbians. Is there a conservative case for gay marriage?  Mark Worth is minister at the Unitarian Universalist Church of Ellsworth.
