Trafficking in Hope

given by Lane Fisher

What distinguishes hope from cockeyed optimism?  Why do some people feel disdain for the notion of hope?  How can one cultivate hope while teetering on the brink of despair?  Four and a half years of helping to edit Hope magazine have taught Lane a few thing about the ins and outs of hope, and today she’ll share some conundrums, insights, and wonders.

Arise! -- A Mother's Cry for Peace

given by our minister, Pam Gross

The idea for Mother's Day was originally initiated by Julia Ward Howe, a Unitarian, as a Mother's Day for Peace.  Her intent was to honor the idea of Peace, in world more dedicated to war.  She wrote A Mother's Day Proclamation in 1870 and spent the remainder of her life attempting to draw women all over the world into a common protest for peace.  And yet, she is most popularly known as the author of the words of the Battle Hymn of the Republic, a Civil War era marching-off-to war song.  An intriguing combination, and a timely one for our own day.

Poetry, Prayer, Mediation and the Present

given by Barbara Maria, Belfast's Poet Laureate

Poetry sharpens our experience of big time and big space by giving us pause and drawing us into one moment "the present" -- the place we share with all life, and with the Divine.

MAY 23

Back to the Land:  More Tales of the Unexpected

given by David Smith

Escaping Boston and moving to Montville in 1971, I'll tell a few stories out of Waldo County and pay tribute to some local folks who have a huge influence of my life.  (New member ceremony)

Flags and Flowers

given by Jane Haskell

The last Monday in May, Memorial Day, is observed with flags, flowers, and as the beginning of summer.  But wait, why flags and flowers?  When did Memorial Day start?  Why parades?  What are cemeteries readied?  This service will delve into the holiday's origins and symbols, and you'll hear the words of people for whom we still offer flags and flowers.
