JANUARY SERVICES

JAN 2

Breaking in the New Year

gven by Jane Dopheide

This service centers around the Stick Ceremony, which invites us to reflect on letting go and beginning anew.  Everyone is invited to bring a stick of choice to add to the basket.

JAN 9

First Principle Confusion

given by Sumner Roberts

It's short, it's sweet, but also rather confusing, at least for a farmer with a background in wildlife ecology.  Sumner will share some of his thoughts on personhood, inherent worth, and dignity after 18 years of being an enthusiastic UU despite his reservations about the first principle in the UUA's covenant.

JAN 16

Martin Luther King Sunday

given by Pam Gross, Minister of our congregation

Welcome or not, here we come.  For nearly 40 years, the Unitarian Universalist denomination has been committed to meeting the challenge of overcoming oppression in our congregations and our communities.  And yet, in recent times, we have witnessed other religious denominations engaged in very public struggles against sexual minorities.  In the last year or so, we have also witnessed the rise of a powerful political force that stands in direct opposition to our Unitarian Universalist value of welcoming all people.  The question now stands for us:  how will we respond to the oppressions of our day?

JAN 23

Life, The Universe, and Everything

given by Pam Page

In an exercise based on the 4th UU Principle, this service will explore the eep Questions of the Meaning of Life, and Why we are Here, etc. (...with a ittle help from Douglas Adams!)

JAN 30

The Transylvanian Connection

given by Linda Buckmaster

As we all know, Transylvania is the birthplace of... Unitarianism! Even today, there are still Unitarian churches in the region that have survived Catholicism, the Nazis, and Communism.  As Linda prepares to leave for Peace Corps service in Romania, she reflects on the place of our liberal religious heritage.

FEB 6

Seeking a Spiritual Community

given by Harold Vine

Harold shares highlights of the spiritual journey - from New York City to coastal Maine - that brought him to our church, and reflects on his experiences here.
