OCTOBER SERVICES

OCT 9

God Bless the Two-Faced

given by the Rev. Kate Braestrup

Kate, who is chaplain for the Maine State Game Warden Service and perhaps the high priestess of original perspective, will lead us to consider the virtues of hypocrisy.

OCT 16

The Referendum: Rejection, Toleration or Celebration?

given by the Rev. Dick Snyder

The November 8 Referendum brings to the surface the deep divisions within our society–one that in this case is rooted in some deeply held religious beliefs. Why do some oppose equal rights for gays? Will this legislation be the foothold for gay marriage? What are the choices before us and what are their implications? Are there guidelines for our response within the Bible and the UU principles?

Potluck follows the service. Even if you forget to bring something, don‘t forget to stay!

OCT 23

“Soft Seats and No Hell” Revisited

given by Linda Buckmaster

In the 18th and 19th centuries, Universalism‘s message of universal salvation was a radical antidote to the era‘s conservative view of eternal damnation. The belief in a loving, compassionate god as well as equality on earth and in heaven especially appealed to rural and working-class folks and the marginalized. How might this message help us contemporary UUs bridge the class divide and reach out to others? How can it once again be a counterbalance to current religious conservatism?

OCT 30

Autumnscapes

given by Mike Shannon

Relax your mind and spirit as we celebrate this season through stories, poems, and reflections that connect us to our natural heritage. Bring an autumn reading to share out loud, if you like.

NOV 6

Honoring Our Elders

given by Coleen O’Connell and Kathy Muzzy

In an interconnected world, all generations are vital to the health of a community. This day we will honor our elders for their vital role the life of our church. Bring your favorite story of an elder who has guided you.
