In Search of ... Something
given by our
minister, Pam Gross
Most of us arrive here yearning for and searching
for...something. With our fourth
principle, we affirm and promote “a free and responsible search for truth
and meaning.” So what does such a
search look like?

Beginning the Conversation: Islam
given by Wells
Staley-Mays and Dawud Ummah
Wells Staley-Mays, M.Div., became a Muslim in 2000 after years
of study and travel. He made the
pilgrimage to Mecca in 2002. Since
Sept. 11, 2001, he has spoken in churches, schools, colleges, and community
organizations about the history of Islam and the situation for Muslims in
the world today. Dawud Ummah is the
Muslim chaplain at USM. An
African-American Muslim, Dawud is active with the Religious Affairs
Committee of the Portland branch of the NAACP and in Interfaith Maine. They will be available after the service
to speak with anyone who is interested and hope that this will be the
beginning of a longer dialogue with our congregation.

Time Well Spent
given by Gail
O’Donnell
On the day of our annual meeting, our outgoing co-chair will reflect
upon the spiritual meaning of her two years of intense service to our
congregation. Ever the pragmatist,
she also will ask members of the congregation to complete a survey for the
Long-Range Planning Committee.

Mama’s All Right
given by the Rev.
Kate Braestrup
Spring is the season for encountering Mother Earth, as we head
into the garden, walk in the warm woods, and venture out onto (if not yet
into) the water. UU pulpits often
refer to “our fragile Earth,” but just how fragile is our “mother,” really?

Heaven on Earth
given by our minister, Pam Gross
The idea of heaven
on Earth is deeply embedded in our Unitarian Universalist history and
tradition. Today, there are many voices
expressing the idea that we create our reality from our Intentions and,
because of that, it is possible for us to create heaven on Earth,
personally and collectively. The
book, The Secret, is the latest entry into this dialogue. What does The Secret have to do with
Unitarian Universalism?
