Oct. 5 Who Knows Best?

The Quest for Perfection in an Imperfect World

Given by our minister, Pam Gross

In these anxious times, we have been inundated with

expert advice on ways to reduce our anxiety by making the

best choices. It seems we live in a world that thrives on the

idea of perfection. We are assured not only that it exists,

but that it is personally attainable. In a faith without The

Perfect Answer—without creeds, a faith that affirms the

individual search for truth and meaning, as well the inherent

worth and dignity of every person—a faith which values

diversity—what does ‘perfect’ really look like?

Oct. 12 Creating the Church of Our Dreams:

Promise vs. Reality.

Given by our minister, Pam Gross

Ours is a non-creedal faith, which means that we don’t

organize ourselves around a unanimously accepted creed

or statement of faith. Unitarian Universalists choose to

gather around a covenant, which is basically promises we

make...to ourselves, one another, our congregation...and as

a congregation—to other UU congregations. A covenant

is about how we will behave with one another, how we

will support each other on our spiritual journeys. So how

are we doing? This is Association Sunday: a special offering

will be taken for support of Unitarian Universalist

Association initiatives.

Oct. 19 “Todos Somos Otros:

One Quaker’s Vision of a Culture of Peace”

Given by Gray Cox

Dominant conceptions of life and society obscure peace

in our culture, leading us to think of it statically and in

terms of what it is not, rather than what it is. Alternative

conceptions of peace, which are not conflict centered, can

be found in Quaker practices of communal discernment

as well as in other traditions. In this talk Gray Cox will

sketch some key elements of this alternative culture in

which peace is understood positively, as a verb. Gray is a

professor in social theory and peace studies at College of

the Atlantic and is one of the cofounders of the Quaker

Institute for the Future.

Oct. 26 The Gifts of Hospice

Given by Chris LeGore

“Only when it was time to register my mother with Hospice, did I

discover how local hospice organizations actually work. How I wish

that I had known about them years earlier; it would have been a

great comfort to me as I watched my mother age and grow ill.”

Chris will briefly explain what hospice is and the incredibly

skilled staff who work in the field. She will share this

deeply spiritual process, and the gifts she received as a

caregiver during the last month of her mother’s life.

Nov. 4 Let Peace Begin With Me

Given by our minister, Pam Gross

Lao- pointed toward one’s own heart as the foundation of

all peace in the world. Becoming a peace activist starts

with one’s own behavior. This is the foundation of building

a “culture of peace”. How do we affirm peacemaking

as a part of our individual and everyday lives? (This is the

first of a sermon series on peacemaking based on the

“Peacemaking Pledge”.
