Sunday
Services Services
are at 10:00 AM at the UU Church of Belfast, 37 Miller St., behind the
Belfast Free Library. Please call 338-4482 for more information. Children, infants
and new faces are always welcome. Please join us! Nov. 2 Let
Peace Begin With Me Given by our
minister, Pam Gross Lao-Tse
pointed toward one’s own heart as the foundation of all peace
in the world. Becoming a peace activist
starts with one’s own behavior. This is the foundation of
building a “culture of peace.” How do we affirm
peacemaking as a part of our individual and everyday
lives? (This is the first of a sermon series on
peacemaking based on the “Peacemaking Pledge.”) Nov 9 “Bridge
to NowHere” Given by the
Rev. Kitsy Winthrop When I heard
(again!) about that “bridge to nowhere”
during the recent campaign, I initially found myself
thinking: “What an image for our nation at this
time!” (And this was before the economic situation had
become what it is.) We will, I trust, know
the outcome of the presidential election by today. What
happens on Election Day will surely influence my
thoughts but, whatever the outcome, we will - as I
have already realized - be on the bridge of Now & Here
- as we always have been and will always be. Nov 16 What if
the Messiah Came and Nothing Changed? given by the
Rev. Dr. T. Richard Snyder Will this be
the beginning of a new day or will our hopes be
dashed? Is fundamental change possible or are we caught
up in circumstances and systems that are
intractable? Nov 23 There
is a blessing for THAT? given by Rabbi
Darah Lerner of the
Congregation Beth El in Bangor In Fiddler
on the Roof someone asks “Is there a proper blessing for
the Czar?” “Of course there’s a blessing for the Czar,”
the rabbi responds. “May God bless and keep the
Czar — far away from us!” According to Jewish
tradition “A person should say one hundred blessings
daily.” We might say, “Are you serious?” The challenge
of blessing today is not only to find the time but
to find the meaning. We will look at the nature of
blessing and how it can challenge us and elevate us. Nov 30 Bread
of Life Communion Led by Linda
Buckmaster Such a simple
food — bread — but one with powerful meanings in many
cultures and over many centuries. For this Bread
Communion, a service we have done in past
years, please bring a few small squares of bread that are
meaningful for in you in some way — an old family
recipe, Wonder Bread, locally grown and produced,
or the “bread” of other cultures such as tortillas.
We will add them to the communal baskets, tell stories,
and pass them for sharing. (P.S. You don’t need to
bring bread to participate.) December 7
Peace Between Us. Led by our
minister, Pam Gross Our holiday
season is traditionally a time for seeking and creating
peace—not only within our selves—but with an
outward “other” focus. The second step in becoming
genuine peacemakers may well be the most challenging.
Perhaps the greatest gift we can give during this season is
to pledge ourselves to “creating deeper peace
in our relations with others.” Where/How
might we start? (This is the second of a sermon
series on peacemaking based on the “Peacemaking
Pledge.”)
