Sunday
Services Services
are at 10:00 AM at the UU Church of Belfast, 37 Miller St., behind the
Belfast Free Library. Please call 338-4482 for more information. Children, infants
and new faces are always welcome. Please join us! Nov. 30 Bread of Life Communion Led by Linda Buckmaster Such a simple food — bread — but one
with powerful meanings in many cultures and over
many centuries. For this Bread Communion, a service we
have done in past years, please bring a few small
squares of bread that are meaningful for in you in some way —
an old family recipe, Wonder Bread, locally grown
and produced, or the “bread” of other cultures such as
tortillas. We will add them to the communal baskets, tell
stories, and pass them for sharing. (P.S. You don’t need to
bring bread to participate.) Dec. 7 Peace Between Us led by our minister, Pam Gross Our holiday season is traditionally
a time for seeking and creating peace—not only within our
selves—but with an outward “other” focus. The second
step in becoming genuine peacemakers may well be the
most challenging. Perhaps the greatest gift we can
give during this season is to pledge ourselves to “creating
deeper peace in our relations with others.” Where/How might we
start? (This is the second of a sermon series on
peacemaking based on the “Peacemaking Pledge.”) We will be welcoming New Members
this morning and celebrating with a pot-luck lunch
after the service. Dec. 14 Would You Like To Hold the
Baby? A celebration led by the choir,
children, and members of the Congregation The Christmas season is upon us.
Come help us celebrate the season by sharing with you the
Nativity Story, for it is a part of our history and
culture. Through the rich imagery of this timeless story,
we can discover spiritual truths that are relevant even today.
We simply need, like the shepherds, to have “ears to
hear and hearts to receive.” This is an
Intergenerational Service. Dec. 21 (Winter Solstice) Winterscapes:
A Seasonal Celebration given by Mike Shannon Jim Vickery, in his book Winter
Sign, reminds us that winter is a mistress to reckon with: it
hunts us with its cold and haunts us with its beauty. Let’s
embrace this season through stories and reflections that
celebrate the darkness and returning light Dec. 24 A Christmas Eve of Carols
and Stories Led by Sumner Roberts A blend of Sumner’s favorite carols
and other members’ favorite Christmas stories, this
cheerful service has become a UUB tradition. Dec. 28 Real Generosity given by members of the Services
Committee As hard as we may strive to shift
the focus, we are emerging from a season that, in our culture,
puts great weight on material gifts. This morning,
members of the Services Committee will share stories and
reflections on the nature of generosity and will invite people
in the congregation to share their own insights. Jan. 4 Turning Over and Stepping Up led by Jane Dopheide We’ve turned the page on 2008 and
2009 is spread before us. This first service of the new
year brings with it the opportunity to reflect both
personally and as a community on what we will be leaving behind
and how we will be moving forward. Will we do so in
fear and in the spirit of scarcity or will be embrace
gratitude, abundance and love?
