Stepping Up led by Jane Dopheide We’ve turned the page on 2008
and 2009 is spread before us. This first service of the new year brings with it
the opportunity to reflect both personally and as a community on what we
will be leaving behind and how we will be moving forward. Will we do so
in fear and in the spirit of scarcity or will we embrace gratitude, abundance
and love? Jan. 11 The Inherent Worth and
Dignity of Every Culture led by Bill Cressey As UUs we affirm the inherent
worth and dignity of every person. Does that go for every culture too?
What if certain core practices in some cultures violate our second principle:
justice, equity and compassion in human relations? How do we reconcile
the two? Bill will propose some answers to these questions and will offer
some thoughts about the nature of culture and about what happens when
different cultures come into contact. Jan. 18 A Question Box Sermon–When did you know you were
white? led by our Minister, Pam Gross In a nation with a long history
of racial conflict, what might happen when white people name and
acknowledge our own race? For the theologian Thandeka, it is the place where peace
might begin. Jan. 25 Looking at the World Through
Rainbow Colored Glasses or How Gratitude Colors My World led by Anna Wood-Cox Anna will give us her personal
reflections on how difficult times offer up some wonderful gifts. Feb. 1 The Peacemaker’s Pledge:
Becoming a Congregation of Peacemakers led by our minister, Pam Gross What would a congregation of
peacemakers be like? What would such a congregation do? (This is the
third of a sermon series on peacemaking based on the “Peacemaking Pledge”.)
