June 7 Stirring Up Minds

given by Danielle Bannister and the Life Span Education Committee

According to William Ellery Channing, “The great end in religious

instruction is not to stamp our minds upon the young, but to stir up their

own.” Danielle will explore with us how our RE program lives up to this

statement, as well as how we can we make it stronger.

June 14 Islam Looks at Racism

given by Wells Staley-Mays, Mansour Ahmed, and El Fadel Arbab

Islam honors all races and admonishes Muslims to avoid attitudes of superiority

based on race. This morning three Muslims will assert, borrowing

the title of a book from Imam Abdul Rauf, that “what is right with Islam

is right with America.” The models of Medina and the U. S. Constitution

affirm that we are all one humankind and must work together to achieve

equality and justice. Portland resident Wells Staley-Mays, M.Div., became

a Muslim in 2000 after years of study and travel. Mansour Ahmed is the

president of the Fur Cultural Revival, a Portland organization that seeks to

educate the public about the genocide in Darfur and to assist individuals

and institutions in divesting from companies doing business with the government

of Sudan. El Fadel Arbab is an activist working in the Save

Darfur Coalition, a national alliance with a similar mission.

June 21 Going to the Very Edge: Where the old world ends

and something new begins. given by our minister, Pam Gross

An edge is a place of transition and transformation, a place both terrifying

and inspiring. And thus an edge is a place of spiritual deepening. Where

are the “edges” of your life?

June 28 Communing With Flowers

led by UU gardeners

All are invited to come at this time of “blooming” to hear some of the

gardeners among us speak about their personal passion. The annual

“Flower Communion” will also be given to honor religious freedom and

our first principle “The inherent worth and dignity of every person.”

Everyone is encouraged to bring a flower for the communion baskets.

July 5 How Can We Keep from Singing?

given by Sumner Roberts

Do you feel a surge of gladness when the next hymn turns out to be a

beloved one? Do you love to hear spontaneous harmonies arising from our

congregation? Then join us for Sumner’s “hymn sing,” one of the most

spirited services of the year, and be ready to request your favorites.
