Belfast Accessibility Project.
In 2010, in order to support our handicapped veterans as well
as the local handicapped community, Stephen Allen did a survey of
the downtown Belfast businesses to determine how many of them were
handicapped accessible and how many could be made accessible if the
businesses were to purchase or build a threshold ramp. It was determined
that 50% of the businesses were already accessible and 30% of the
remaining could be made accessible. The Social Justice Committee is
working to educate the businesses on the benefits of having a portable
ramp. For more information contact Stephen or Neva Allen (338-0613.)
GBAM Food Cupboard. Our

Guests at Your Table. We
support the Guest at your Table Program of the UU Service Committee.
This program is a powerful voice for human rights and has provided
leadership for social change in communities throughout the United
States and around the world.
Palestine/Israel. The Social
Action Committee has for some time had the conflict in Palestine and
Israel as one of its projects. We believe that since Israel receives
more foreign aid from the taxpayers of the U.S. through our government
than any other country in the world, and because of the injustice
of the situation for Palestinians, it is very much a matter pertinent
to our Unitarian Universalist Principles. The Committee is a member
of the Unitarian Universalists for Justice in the Middle East, and
it plans to continue making whatever contribution, in coordination
with the congregation, it can to bring expressions of its commitment
to justice, equity and compassion for the people of occupied Palestine.

Peace
& Justice Group. We support the Waldo County Peace &
Justice Group(WCPJG) through our financial and personal support of
their film series. Additional financial support has gone toward the
purchase of films/videos distributed to area organizations sponsoring
education programs on international cooperation. Some members also
participate in Peace Vigils every Sunday 12 to 1 p.m. at the corner
of Main and High Streets in Belfast. For more information contact

Restorative Justice. The
Restorative Justice Project of the Midcoast was created in 2003 through
the efforts of the Social Justice Committee to be an alternative to
the retributive response to crime and wrongdoing of the current criminal
and juvenile justice systems. The church continues to provide funding,
meeting space, and volunteers. Read
