Music…gives soul to the universe, wings to the mind, flight to the imagination, and charm and gaiety to life… — Plato
Our congregation loves music and loves to sing! Music in our church is a vital and integral part of our worship services. Our adult choir has about 20 members and on the first and third Sundays of each month provides a wide range of music from classical to folk with a little gospel thrown into the mix as well. The choir can always be counted on to sing for other special occasions, such as All Choir Sunday, the Winter Solstice Celebration, and at various other holiday celebrations and events during the year like “Standing On The Side Of Love,” a fundraiser where church members and outside musicians perform everything from arias to rock ‘n roll, interspersed with love poems, delicious food, and a lot of humor.
Many members of our congregation bring their own unique musical gifts to our services and special events. On any given Sunday, one might hear various instruments and styles of music. Our baby grand Steinway provides a deep and sonorous dimension to our services. As is the case with most Unitarian/Universalist churches, we celebrate diversity, and never more so than in our music program here at UU Belfast.
To be thoroughly prepared to sing its diverse repertoire, there are weekly rehearsals during the regular church year every Thursday evening from 7 – 9 pm.
The UU Church choir is always thrilled to have new members. Reading music is not a prerequisite. Our overarching goal, as reflected in our Choir Covenant, is to enhance the spirituality of our Sunday services, and to make music an integral part of the quest for truth. If you are looking for a spiritual home where your heart can sing, consider being part of our wonderful music program.
