The UU Church of Belfast has a particularly robust calendar of events and activities, many of which contribute to its coffers while serving needs in the local community. The profits of these events contribute approximately 10% of the church’s operating budget.
The popular Clothing Sale, Yard Sale, and Book Sale are always very successful. A strong reputation and broad publicity ensures a big turnout every time. The Clothing Sale, which provides good quality clothing at low prices, has become such an established and anticipated event that many people outside the congregation would miss it should it not occur.
The success of these sales is dependent on donations of goods and time. It takes many hours and many volunteers to get the merchandise ready for display, sell it, and clean up or to solicit services and merchandise and list it for the auction. However, such teamwork is a great way to increase church income and connections with other members.
UUCB participates in a fundraising project with Hannaford supermarkets. After Sunday services volunteers sell Hannaford cards to use in place of cash or credit cards when purchasing groceries. UUCB receives a percentage of each card sold. This very successful fundraiser has raised several thousands of dollars for UUCB since 2010.
The Fundraising Committee seeks out members and friends of the congregation who have a special interest or skill and who would like to take the lead or collaborate in turning that interest or skill into a fundraising opportunity for the church.
